Какво е WHOIS?
Всяка година милиони хора, бизнеси, организации и правителства регистрират домейн имена. Всеки от тях трябва да предостави идентификация и контакт информация, която може да включва: име, адрес, имейл, телефонен номер, както и административен и технически контакт. Тази информация често се свърза с термина „WHOIS данни“. WHOIS услугата обаче не е просто една централизирана база данни. Тя всъщност се менажира от независими органи, известни още като „регистрари“ и „регистри“. Всяко лице, желаещо да бъде признато като такъв орган трябва да придобие акредитация от ICANN. Тези признати регистрари (регистри) имат договорни отношения с ICANN да оперират с определена група домейни от първо ниво, като например .COM, .ORG или някое от по-новите и модерни разширения например .STORAGE, .LINKS, .GOOGLE и т.н.
Въз основа на съществуващите политики и договори за консенсус, ICANN се ангажира да прилага мерки за поддържане на навременен, неограничен и обществен достъп до точна и пълна информация на WHOIS, при спазване на приложимите закони. За целта регистраторите и регистрите предоставят публичен достъп до данни за регистрирани имена на домейни. Всеки може да използва WHOIS протокола за търсене в техните бази данни и идентифициране на регистранта на име на домейн.
WHOIS проследява корените си до 1982 г., когато Internet Engineering Task Force публикува протокол за услуга на директории за потребители на ARPANET. Първоначално директорията просто съдържа информацията за контакт, която се изисква от всеки, който предава данни през ARPANET. С нарастването на Интернет WHOIS започна да обслужва нуждите на различни заинтересовани страни като регистратори на имена на домейни, агенти за правоприлагане, собственици на интелектуална собственост и търговски марки, фирми и отделни потребители. Но протоколът е основан на база на тези оригинални IETF стандарти. Това е протоколът WHOIS, който ICANN наследи при създаването си през 1998 г.
За жалост, с влизането в сила на GDPR през 25 май 2018г. WHOIS данните бяха заменени с privacy информация от на практика почти всеки регистрар. Въпреки, че в момента в сайта се поддържат над 1200 WHOIS сървъра, малцина са тези, които дават реална информация.
Така на обикновения потребител се отнема фундаменталното право да разбере кой стои зад даден домейн или IP адрес.
Акуратни, дори и в рамките на GDPR, остават датата на регистрация, подновяване и изтичане на домейните, които повечето WHOIS провайдъри предоставят след заявка.
